The Writing Realm

Realm Map

A unique world  exists in the realm of our own minds.

“The Writing Realm” is a creative writing presentation that maps the journey for any who seek the ultimate quest: into the world within, discovering new dimensions of thought, learning, and imagination.

In a one-hour presentation given by author and storyteller Connie J. Martin, travelers ages nine through twelve will be given a black and white 11x17 copy of the map to decorate as they embark on a guided tour through the landmarks on the map.

First they will sail to Owl Rock and find its hidden passage and message (observation skills).  Next the adventurers must cross the Mist-erious Lake that is shrouded in fog and riddled with lightning (brainstorming).

On to the Questioning Mountains and through their maze of cavernous tunnels, adventurers will discover the five caves of Who, What, When, Where, and Why, and collect the secrets concealed inside (characters, goals, setting, motivations).

After passing through the Dragon’s Lair (conflict), they will encounter more amazing sights until they come to the Great Hall of Knowledge (libraries and research), and are plunged down through The Narrows (editing), and out to the Unfathomable Sea.

Creative writing is so much more than making up stories. Each of us has something important to say, and this is a medium through which our unique voice can be heard—leaving an impression, like footprints, not in the sand, but in the very minds of others.

Thrilling and exciting, difficult and demanding, powerful and poignant—The Writing Realm.

(A more sophisticated map for a young adult presentation is being drafted. This second version will be available by fall of 2008. )

The presentation includes PowerPoint slides, music, simple illusions, and a gelatin brain. It celebrates the power of individuality, self-expression, reading, and, of course, writing.  This can be done as an assembly, but preferably with no more than three classes.

The overview is $150 per day with the presale of 30 books, and possible travel expenses. I do try to make this available to all schools and organization and understand the financial difficulties many are facing with growing student numbers.

The three-hour "hands-on" seminar is $350 and no more than three classes at one time.

This program has been done as an after-school enrichment class with a $35.00 fee for each participant.
